LAWN TENNIS

WELLINGTON PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT It is unfortunate that there should be a clash in the dates of the North Island Championship tournament at Masterton and the Wellington Provincial Championships at Miramar, both tournaments commencing on January--19. It is to be hoped that players will not neglect the opportunity to support their home association and patronise their own tournament. The present management committee is a most efficient one, and in Mr. W. Watson the association has an honorary secretary who can be depended upon to see that the arrangements are such that visitors from other associations, as well as all local players, will receive every courtesy and attention. The programme includes men’s singles and doubles, ladies’ singles and doubles, and mixed doubles, in championships and handicaps. There are also junior events. The grass courts are in first-class order, and there will be sufficient to cope with the heaviest of entries. WELLINGTON V. WAIRARAPA. Tennis players and the public generally are reminded of the first interprovincial fixture, Wellington v. Wairarapa, to be played on the association grounds at Miramar to-day. Players are requested to.be in attendance byll a.m. Wairafapa are to be commended for sending a team down, and the least Wellington players can do is to turn out in force and give them encouragement in their difficult task against the best team Wellington can put in the field.
