TYPHOID AT BORSTAL INSTITUTE
SEVERAL CASES IN HOSPITAL By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hamilton, January 1. Two deaths have recently occurred at the Waikato Hospital of inmates from the Borstal Institute at Waikeria. The second victim was Alfred Leo Lewis, and at an inquest held into the circumstances, a verdict was returned that he died from toxema following au attack of typhoid. Dr. Hockin, medical superintendent, did not think there was any similarity between the symptoms of the two cases. Cosgrave, who died some ten days previously, had a new pitchfork through his foot, and it was thought he contracted tetanus. No signs of tetanus were found, but there were pneumonia symptoms, gnd also some of diphtheria. There are four other cases of typhoid in the hospital from Waikeria, and Dr. Hockin expressed the opinion that there is a carrier in the institution. One inmate is under observation in that regard.
