TRAFFIC THROUGH OTIRA TUNNEL
RECORD YEAR’S TONNAGE Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, December 31. A record in the amount of railway goods traffic handled on the Midland line has been established for the 12 months ended to-day, the tonnage hauled through the Otira tunnel beiug 536.56 S in comparison with 449.996 last year. This brings the total goods tonnage on this line since the tunnel was opened to 2,153,552. The yearly figures prior to 1927 have been as f0110w;—1926, low;—1926, 421,906 tons; 1925, 354.867 tons; 1924 (nearly five months only), 85,171 tons.
