Mr. Justice Scrutton granted William Cooper Hobbs leave to appeal from Lord Hewart’s refusal to adjourn the Nottingham libel case. He intimated that it.could be taken with the hearing of the appeals against the “Liver-pool-Express” and “Nottingham Journal” verdicts.
[Hobbs, who was sentenced to two rears’ imprisonment in connection with the notorious Mr. “A” blackmail swindle, and is now out of prison, sued the Liverpool and Nottingham papers mentioned for libel in regard to stories of his life published by them. The jury awarded a farthing damages at Liverpool, and at Nottingham Lord Justice Hewart declined to grant an adjournment. Hobbs appealed.]
