COLLEGE CRICKET

WANGANUI v. WELLINGTON GOOD GAME MARRED BY RAIN

The weather was most unkind for the continuation of the annual match between Wanganui Collegiate School and Wellington College, on the local college ground yesterday. .

Though the weather was fine when Wanganui resumed their first innings, a heavy shower came on half an hour later, and caused an adjournment.. Thereafter play was continued in drizzling showers, with adjournments at intervals, until the wind changed to the south shortly before 4 o’clock, and heavy rain put a stop to play for the day. . With two wickets down for ItU in reply to Wellington’s opening knock of 156 Marshall (36) and Bullock-Douglas (28) continued for the visitors yesterday. After 14 runs had been added, the latter was taken by Paetz off Middlebrook. The retiring batsman had shaped well for his 36, having assisted Marshall to add 70 runs for the third wicket. Hornabrook followed, and another good stand was made. After scoring exactly the same number of runs aS BullocKDouglas had done, Hornabrook was snapped up by Davies off Paetz. A big slump then set in, and the.innings, which had opened so promisingly,, closed for the moderate total of 253. Marshall gave a sound display for 84, m which he made good shots all round the wicket. C 0 ' 11 " in second wicket down, his was the eighth Wl Kobin°ori, ■ Middlebrook, and Paetz, each of whom captured three wickets, shared the bowling honours for Wellington College, and they would have come out with better, figures if an °f. dropped catches had not set in. Fieldi g is usually a strong point with Wellington College teams, but far too many easy chances were dropped yesterday. • The local team commenced their sec ond innings after lunch, and Paetz and Wiren gave the side a good start. Wiren, who had batted, for an hour and a half in the first, innings for .7 runs, again set up a barn-door defence, and defied the bowlers to shift him', though the fieklsraeli clustered close round .his bat. The bowlers were severely handicapped by the greasy- ball, treacherous foothold, and easy wicket, hilt plugged away determinedly in the drizzling rain. After scoring 10 in good style. Paetz put his pad in front' of a straight one from Hornabrook. Cramond’ then joined Wiren, and this pair were still together when heavy rain put a stop to play shortly before 4 o’clock. The score then stood at 5b for the loss of one wicket. The match will be resumed at 10 o’clock this morning, if weather permits, and will be continued until finality is reached. Amongst the interested spectators at the match were Mr. W. A. Armour, principal of Wellington College, and Mr. J. Allen, acting principal of Wanganui College. Mr. Allen for many years past has acted as cricket coach at his school, and has turned out many fine players during the past fifteen years. Mr. F. Joplin, cricket coach to Wellington College, was also in attendance to watch how his young charges shaped. The visitors are being hospitably entertained by their hosts, luncheon and afternoon tea being provided each day. After rain stopped play yesterday, the visitors were conducted over the new Memorial Hall by Mr. Armour. . The following, are the scores: — WANGANUI—First Innings. J. E. Geisen, b. Robinson 24 M. R.
