A COMMENDABLE TRADE PROPOSAL

In the annual report of the Australian Association of British Manufacturers, attention was directed to the height to which the tariff wall was being erected in Aus-

tralia with the object of protecting the textile industry of the Commonwealth from outside competition. The recent complaint by hosiery makers of Leicester, England, told how certain sections of British manu faeturers had been adversely affected by the Australian tariff. To preserve as far as practicable the Australian market for British textiles, .it was suggested in the report of the textile section of the association that it would be realised that some years would elapse before Australia could meet all its own textile needs. Accordingly opportunity should be offered for maintaining a successful British trade connection with Australia on lines of goods which at present were not being made within the Commonwealth. As other countries “were moving to establish themselves, a service of considerable value could be rendered to British trade by the appointment to Australia of a full-time secretary for the textile section of the association. “The Tinies” directs attention to this proposal, and considers it to be worthy of consideration on the part of British manufacturers. It can be affirmed that if a suitable appointment be made the official would be able to largely indicate the possible trend of Australian manufactures, and , to warn British makers of textiles of attempts to be made to increase protection on definite lines of textile goods. He also would be able to convey to Federal politicians the strength of feeling existing in some of the industrial areas of Great Britain at the calls made upon British people to buy Australian goods when such an effort was being made by Commonwealth politicians to keep British imports out of Australia.
