LADY ALICE FERGUSSON

CAMPING HOLIDAY AT THREE KINGS

Dominion Special Service.

Auckland, December 18.

After a ten days’ holiday tour of the northern coasts, during which three days were • spent camping on the Three Kings, Lady Alice Fergusson and party returned to Onehunga by the Government steamer Tutauekai to-day. Fine weather conditions were experienced throughout the trip and the holiday proved most enjoyable. The party, comprising Lady Alice Fergusson, the Countess Metaxa, Mrs. Dougdale, Mr. A. Whitcombe (Auckland), Mr, W. Fraser (engineer to the Whangarei Harbour Board) and Captain Orr Ewing, A.D.C., left Auckland by the Tutauekai on December 8. Several lighthouses were visited on the East Coast, Her Excellency going ashore at several places and visiting the keepers and their families. Arriving off the Three Kings last Wednesday the party went ashore in the ship’s boats and a large quantity/ of camping gear, including tents and provisions, was landed on the beach. The tents were erected in a sheltered spot near the beach and the Tutauekai then left to visit other lights in the vicinity. Until she returned on Saturday the campers spent an ideal holiday on the Three Kings walking and fishing. There are no inhabitants ou the islands, which lie about 35 miles north of Capa Maria Vau Diemen. Although rugged in parts there is a multitude of plants ou the islands and Lady Alice Fergusson was particularly keen upon studying them during the short stay. The party was picked up by the Tutauekai ou Saturday and after calling at Dargaville and Kaipara the steamer returned to Onehunga.
