WANGANUI COLLEGE

ANNUAL PRIZE-GIVING

GOOD WORK IN SPITE OF DIFFICULTIES Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, December 17. The prize-giving of the Wanganui Collegiate School was held at the college to-night in the presence of a large number of parents and friends. The Right Hon. J. G. Coates and Mrs. Coates were present, and Mr. Coates presented the prizes. . Mr. Allen, acting-headmaster, read his report and welcomed Mr. and Mrs. Coates. The year opened with 232 boarders (a full house) and 40 day boys, he said. The college would start 1929 with 230 boarders and 40 day boys. Fifty boarders were already on the books for 1930. Influenza and scarlet fever had had a disastrous effect on the work and routine of the school during the first two terms, and it was clear that the .accommodation in case of an epidemic was quite inadequate. Nurse Beaven, who had been in charge of the sanatorium for 14 years, had resigned, and the school tendered her grateful thanks. In outside examinations at the end of 1927 one candidate passed with credit for the university entrance scholarship and 22 passed , the matriculation examination. Two gained junior national scholarships. In spite of practically losing one term, the school put its shoulder to the wheel and had done good work. This year there had been a total of 90 boys for outside examinations, which seemed to provide ample evidence that they do not spend all their time playing cricket and football. Mr. Allen pointed out that W. E. Henley, head prefect of the school in 1920, had been elected to a Rhodes Scholarship. Letters received from the Rev. Pierce indicated that the holiday has benefited his health, and he would return to New Zealand on January !•>. Mr Coates was greeted with hearty applause. He congratulated the boys on the year’s work before presenting the Pr A e short musical programme was given and class prizes awarded.
