RESURRECTION OF AUSTRIA
QUAKERS’ EFFECTIVE WORK.
“One fact which few people in England and even in Austria have appreciated is that behind the intervention of the League lies a great history of Quaker appeals aud intercessions ou Austria’s behalf,” writes Mr. Shoran S. Singha in the “New Chronicle.” “The handful of English men and women who were most closely in touch with the everyday sorrows and sufferings of this stricken coutnry, and shared the anguish and pain of their fellow creatures, did all in their power to save the country from a collapse into Communism and revolution by their practical guidance in the land settlement schemes, by feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and saving the children from the jaws of death. They, however, saw that their financial and practical resources could not adequately deal with the critical situation. By personal interviews, conducting groups of people that mattered around the various welfare centres, and getting hold of the key men in the League circles, they were able to move the cumbersome machinery of Geneva, and thus bring about the resurrection of this nation. True to their ideals, the Friends are continuing to serve Austria and the cause of internationalism iu a quiet and effective way. There is no flourish of trumpets, nothing spectacular to strike the popular imagination.”
