RIFLE-SHOOTING

KARORI CLU3 The Karori Rifle Club fired over ranges 800, 000 and 1000 yards on Saturday. This was the final shoot for the Wltcombe and Caldwell Cup, and also counueuted the C.A.C. and Bertram Cup competitions. The winner of the Wltcombe and Caldwell Cup was H. Boon, juur., who finished one point ahead of H. Croxton. Boon’s success was well merited and was the result of consistently good shooting right through the competition. The conditions on Saturday were exceptionally tricky, particularly at the longer ranges. In consequence the scores as a whole were poor. The best returns were made at 800 yards, where Pres. Croxton scored the possible, L. Old 34, F. Ching and H. Russell 33, were next best. At 000 yards a troublesome wind accounted for many misses and here H. Boon, junr., did well to score 31, and W. J. Haase one point less. H. Croxton with 31 and L. Old with 30 were the best returns at 1000 yards the same members making top score for the day with 93 and 92 respectively. The following are the totals:—Wltcombe and Caldwell Cup: H. Boon, junr., 358; H. Croxton, 357; J'. Ching, 351. The club will resume Its competition programme on January 12. SUBURBS CLUB The Suburbs Club fired the second shoot of the third series on Saturday afternoon at 300 and SIX) yards. A tricky frontal right wind needed continual watching, especially at 300 yards, where it caught many, with low shots, but otherwise it was one of the best shooting days of this season so tar. Rifleman. S. F. McLean and H. T. King made the best gun score at 300 with 45 each, and were followed by A. Stewart with 44. At 500 yards, where conditions were much better, Deputy-President H. R. Hunt was best with 47. and followed by H. T. Peat with 46. Rifleman S. F. McLean made the best gun score for the day with 89 off the rille. PETONE CLUB The Petone Rifle Club fired the fourth and final competition for the short range series competition at Trentham on Saturday, at ranges 300 and 500 yards. Despite the doubtful weather conditions, there was a good attendance, and with the shooting conditions improving all the time, some good scores were registered. At 300 yards W. Mclver and L. Wales were to the fore with 46 each, followed by A. O’Donnell with 45, and several with 44. At 500 yards most of . the members found the conditions to their liking and high scoring resulted. W. Mclver, T. Warburton, and W. Johnston each scored 18 out of the possible 50, J. Hunter 47, and A. O’Donnell, R. A. Wilton, and R. 11. Nlcholl 40 each. With a total of 114 off the gun, W. Mclver secured the highest aggregate for the day, his total being one point over the club standard. T. Warburton was next with 92, A. O’Donnell 9t, and W. Johnston, R. A. Wilton, R. H.
