Numerous inquiries have been received from foreign countries indicating great interest in novelty goods made from New Zealand tree-fern (reports the Nelson “Mail”). It. is only within the past two years that the industry has been developed; and the wooden objects, mostly vases, are now manufactured in considerable numbers. On account of the nature of the wood, which is stringy and easily split, a special process is necessary in turning the rough blocks. The vases, which are mottled and present a handsome appearance, have been forwarded to Canada. America, Europe, and even China. One consignment was addressed to Central Africa. Mention of the fact that Mr. 11. Fenton was making his fiftieth appearance in “The Messiah” was made at the performance at Auckland recently by the conductor, Mr. Colin Muston (says the “Herald”). The distinction is a record for New Zealand. Mr. Fenton, who plays the viola, is a son of the late Judge Fenton, one of the founders ot J the Auckland Choral Society.
