AUTOMOBILE CLUB REPORT NOTES FOR HOLIDAY TRAFFIC The Wellington Automobile Club furnishes the following road report for December for publication in view of the holiday traffic: — Main Trunk Route. Wellington to Shannon to Palmerston, North, 100 miles: Good. Wellington to Eoxton to Palmerston North: Good. Foxton to Bulls: Good. Bulls to Taihape, S 3 miles: Good. Taihape to Oliakune, 37 miles: Good, except about one mile unmetalled north of Karori. Repairs being made; expect to be completed for holiday traffic. Waiouru to Tokaanu, 42 miles: Good summer road. Chains required if wet. Bulls to Wangahui: Good order. Wanganui to Ohakune, 72 miles: Passable in fine weather, advisable take chains. Road unmetalled between Knkatahi and Raetihi in places, and is very greasy if wet. . Ohakune to Tanranga, G 7 miles: Fair metalled road. Tauranga to Te Kuiti. 62 miles: Clay road, chains required if " Te Kuiti to Hamilton. 52 miles: Road only in fair condition, pot holes in parts. Hamilton to Pokeno. 47 miles: Road only fair in condition, pot holes in parts. Pokeno to Auckland, 40 miles: Good. Via Taranaki. All roads North and South Taranaki in good order. Wanganui to New Plymouth: Good. Stratford to the Main Trunk through Tangarakau Gorge passable in dry weather. ~ New Plymouth to Te Kuiti. 112 miles . Good to Mahoenui, 76 miles. Mahoenui to Te Kuiti, 33 miles, rough surface. Auckland to Whangarei, 125 miles: Good in fine weather. Advisable to take Cl> Auckland to Helensyille, 39 miles: Good. Helensville to Dargnville, HO miles: Good; chains needed w wet weather, or rail car from Helensville to Maungaturoto; then metal road. Helensville to Kaitaia: Chains required. E ast Coas { an d Taupo. Wellington to Masterton: All main roads Wairarapa district in good order. Masterton to Napier: Good. Palmerston to Woodville: Good. Napier to Wairoa to Gisborne: Good, 23 Nanier S ’to Taupo: Good; 100 miles. Taupo to Waimarino : 70 milesi; good. Taupo to Rotorua to Whakatane, G °Wfiakatane to Gisborne: Whakatane to Motuhora good; Motuliora to Gisborne in bad condition if wet. Gisborne to Hicks Bay. 1-3 miles, good order —summer months. Between Tikitiki and Te Araroa clay road and bad creeks if wet. Now being metalled. Taupo to Atiamuri to Hamilton. 100 miles ; good condition ; chains adt isable if very wet weather. Rotorua to Tirau to Hamilton: Fnstela ss order. Hamilton to Tauranga: Tn good older. The Knimai now nil metalled. Hamilton to Raglan: Road in good ordeWhakatane to Tauranga to Waihi; Good ; if wet, chains may be required. Rotorua to Tauranga: Good via le Puke; via Oropi road in bad state. Waihi to Pokeno: 67 miles; good to Paeroa, rough from Paeroa to. Pokeno. SOUTH ISLAND ROADS. . All roads open to the Southern Lakes and The Hermitage at Mount Cook. Road between Springfield and Otira is open for traffic, subject to favourable weather conditions. In any case, cars would have to be towed through Waimnkarin River at the Bealey. Travelling from Christchurch to West Coast, cars may be trucked at Springfield each morning. 6.2 u a.m., with passenger accommodation.
