AEROPLANE MANUFACTURE STANDARDS

INTERNATIONAL CODE WANTED (Australian Press Association.) (Rec. December 16, 5.5 p.m.) Washington, December 14. The Canadian Deputy-Minister of National Defence, Mr. Des Barats, presented an appeal to the Aeronautical Conference at the final plenary session to-day for the establishment of an international code of standards governing aeroplane manuactures and certificate of airworthiness which would include the United States as well as European countries. • No official action was taken by the meeting, but it is considered probable that there will be further informal discussions before the aviation experts here depart for home.

The failure of the United States to ratify the convention of 1919 is believed here to hinder developments and the export of American aeroplane equipment, and a recent Australian proclamation on this matter seemed to be an Instance in point. Mr. Des Barats explained that Canada has a working agreement with the United States under which Canada imports aviation equipment despite the fact that Canada is a signatory to the convention of 1919. Mr. Des Barats added: “I suggest to members of the conference that they urge upon their respective Governments the necessity of a united code.” The delegates depart to-morrow for Kittyhawk, North Carolina, for the unveiling of the statue in connection with the Wright celebration.
