YACHTING

FOURTH SANDERS CUP TRIAL WON BY ALL BLACK WELLESLEY II RUNNER-UP Plenty of wind, and a fairly calm sea combined to make conditions ideal for the Sanders Cup trial, on Saturday. The race was held over a different course to that of the previous race owing to a strong sou’easterly. One buoy was placed off Clyde Quay Wharf, and the usual Coromandel buoy was the other mark. The five boats went away to a good start, and under bellying spinnakers, leaving the accompanying launch well astern, Wellesley 11. went into the lead, with Clyde and Wellesley 1 in attendance, while Miss Josephine and All Black brought up the rear. The former struck trouble -very soon, as she had no collar on her mast to keep the end of the spinnaker boom down. An improvised collar of lashings was tried, but proved ineffective, and the Paremata boat had to make the best she could of a leader. Wellesley II reached Coromandel at 3.49. after a uine-minutes run, Clyde following her round 7 seconds later. Wellesley I came 16 seconds after her, All Black being separated from her by an interval of 17 seconds. Miss Josephine was half a minute later. On the beat up to Clyde Quay, Al! Black made up a lot of ground, sailing very close to the wind. Wellesley II made the buoy at 4.13, with All Black, who had overtaken Clyde, 28 seconds behind. About two and a half minutes later Wellesley I, Clyde, and Miss Josephine went round within a, second or so of each

other. On the run. down again in the second lap, All Black lost valuable time in getting out her spinnaker. while Miss Josephine and Wellesley I, who were unable to fly theirs, were left well behind. At- the buoy the order was as follows Wellesley 11, 4.22; All Black (50sec.) ;. Cycle (2min. ssec.) ; Wellesley I (2nxin. 15sec.) ; Miss Josephine (Imin. ssec.). The times given are the intervals between the boats. On the : final beat up All Black gradually overhauled Wellesley 11. by a series of short tacks, crossing the line ahead of her after a strenuous tussle. Boats finished in the following order: All Black (A. G. Crawford), 4hrs. 51 min. 59sec. 1 Wellesley II (N. Blair), 4hrs. 52min. 37sec 2 Clyde (E. Bailey), 4hrs. 54min. 25 sec ’3 Wellesley I (B. White), 4hrs. 56min. 25sec 4 Miss Josephine (A. Sterling), 4hrs. 56mim 55sec 5 It is understood that'at' least one more trial will be held.
