WAR RELIEF

MEETING OF WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION

The executive committee of the Wellington War Relief Association met yesterday, Mr.' L. O. Tripp presiding. The application committee reported having met on seven occasions since October 25. During that period of 42 working days 443 applications were received, comprising 45 claims from men who had not previously approached the committee, and 398 applications from others who had done so. During the period under review the emergency committee met on 35 occasions, and dealt _with 212 of the applications received, 159 claims being disposed of by the applications committee. There are 72 applications still under action. The total number of applications received during the period including those submitted to the finance committee, amounted to 472. The number of persons who called at the office during the period was 653. Of these 451 applied for direct, and 202 for indirect assistance. “There has been no alteration,” says the report, “in the general activities of the committee. Assistance differing widely in description has been given to partially disabled soldiers, to others who were discharged fit and subsequently developed a war disability, to the widowed mothers and widows of soldiers who fell in action, and in other directions.” The finance committee reported having held two ordinary and five emergency meetings since the executive committee last met on October 25, and, in addition to its ordinary function of controlling the financial affairs of the association, dealt with 29 applications for assistance by way of loans. Of these five were old applications requiring revision, in. connection with amendments to the original terms of repayment, and 24 were new applications. Four of the latter were approved, whilst the remaining 20—being in no way attributable to, or caused by, war service—were declined.
