DELAY TO “LIMITED”

engine strikes bullock % Dominion Special Service. Marton, December 14. While travelling at an estimated speed of between 35 and 40 miles an hour, the south-bound Auckland-Wel-lington Limited suffered a derailment to-day. The driver’s quickness in stopping his train prevented serious consequences. Approaching Porewa bridge, approximately seven miles noitli of Marton, the train struc. a heavy bullock which had jumped on to the permanent way from a low bank on the line, the Impact- throwing the engine s bogey wheels off the truck, and had not the driver been able to terminate his train’s progress before coming to the bridge, the whole train might quite possibly have been derailed. The train, however, was stopped .within two chains of where the bullock was struck and a chain short of the approach to the bridge, and beyond throwing the front bogey wheels off the track and delaying the train, no damage was done. The passengers, approximately 180 in number, were unaware of any unusual happening until they made inquiiies as to the cause of the train’s delay. No jolt whatever was felt, and after the bogey wheels had been lifted back into position the train continued its journey, arriving at Palmerston North two hours late. The south-bound Auckland-Welling-ton ordinary express arrived at Palmerston North half an hour late, while the Daylight Limited from Wellington was a quarter of au hour late.
