MALING’S APPEAL
AGAINST IMPRISONMENT AND FINE DISMISSED BY HIGH COURT (Rec. November 26, 7 p.m.) Sydney, November 26. Silas Y. Maling's appeal to the High Court against the sentence of six months’ imprisonment and a fine of £5OO, on the ground that the State Courts have no jurisdiction, was dismissed to-day. Maling’s counsel contended that the offence, if any, had been against the Federal Act covering Secret Commissions. This point is being disposed of. Maling’s next step is to appeal to the Quarter sessions now pending. [Silas Young Maling, formerly dep-uty-manager of the Sydney city electricity department, and the principal figure in the recent inquiry into allegations of graft, was fined £5OO and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for corruptly receiving £10.600 from Babcock nnd Wilcox, Ltd. Bail was r owed in the sum of £3OO, pending the hearing of his appeal.]
