“NO ENCUMBRANCES”
Sir,—Kindly let me have a short space in your paper to discuss a sidelight on “child welfare” in New Zealand. I would like to know why people will not have married couples nowadays if they have children—children that have been born in their own country. “No encumbrances” we read in the papers of to-day. It is a cruel shame—little children born of the best of parents, and not wanted if their parents are looking for positions to keep them. Some of the encumbrances of 'the past are now encumbrances in Gallipoli. I am speaking from experience as a young married woman, able to turn my hand to almost anything, with the best of references as to character, etc., and yet not wanted—if encumbrances. All that is wanted in New Zealand is baby cars” to fly about in, and toy dogs instead of little children. —I am. ete. ; “LIVE AND LET LIVE.” Carterton, November 21.
