SHANNON NOTES
The monthly -meeting of the. Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday. Mis. E. Butt was iu the chair. . Reports of the recent social, tea stall, and shop day were received,' and were found to have been the means of putting the institute financially “on its feet” again. The demonstration dor the next meeting is to be on cake icing, by Mies Maddever, of Pabiatua, and Mrs. R. Taylor offered to give a cake for demonstration purposes, and when iced it is to be used in a weightguessing competition for local school funds. The competition for the December meeting, “the ground plan of my ideal house,” was also discussed, and it was. decided to limit the plan to six rooms with all conveniences. The secretary made a special appeal for'entries in-this competition, as the arrangement of house space so closely affected women. The main part of the programme was taken up with a capable demonstration of an electric cleaner and a polisher given by Mr, Armquist. of Palmerston North. Mr. Annquist was accofded a very hearty vote of thanks. The competition for the month was won by Mrs. King, and the game resulted in. a tie by Mesdames Tremewan and Hyde. Afternoon tea was provided by Mesdames B. Tayler and Tremewan. Misses . M. liigley and J. Thompson, who'have been studying music in Christchurch for the past year,- returned home on Wednesday. . , ± After three weeks’ holiday in the north Mr. and Mrs. Thurston returned home on Monday. Mr. and Mrs, Thomas and family left for Westport on Saturday. They were the recipients of presentations from the railway staff and citizens on Friday afternoon. The latest issue of "Home and Country,” the Women’s Institute magazine, shows a photograph of the new car recently purchased. for the chief organiser (Miss Jerome Spencer). The amount necessary for the purchase, insurance, registration, etc., £203. less £24 allowed on the car. was raised by various institutes in less than five months, Shannon’s share being 15. The public meeting called by tne Mayor on Tuesday night to discuss the question- of procuring a resident doctor was well attended, and after discussing two suggestions—(l) The forming of a medical -association, (2) the canvassing of the district for a guaranteed amount—it was decided to endeavour to form a medical 'association. The Mayor and Messrs. Contes. Downes. Hyde, Cronquest, and F. H. Taylor were appointed to interview the various employees and business men of the district. At present Shannon is dependent upon visits twice a week by a Leviu doctor.
