SUCCESSFUL YEAR

DISCHARGED PRISONERS’ AID SOCIETY.

The annual meeting of the Discharged Prisoners’ Aid Society was held yesterday afternoon, Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., presiding. In reading the annual report the secretary (Mr. T. P. Mills) said that the year’s efforts could be briefly summarised as follow:—

“The twenty-third year of the society’s operations has been a successful one, and with a slightly improved revenue the society has again been able to grant more liberal assistance to its many clients. The total numbers assisted were 410; 557 beds were supplied ; 1065 meals provided ; 75 helped with clothes, boots, and tools; 08 with fares; 35 were found employment; and 24 families assisted. This is, of course, only an outline of the work of the society, and does not disclose the individual attention needed in each case, nor the actual benefit to men who are ostracised because of their offences.

“Our thanks are again due (added the report) to all who contributed to the society’s funds, to the T. G. Macarthy trustees, who granted £2OO, a very acceptable increase of £5O over last year’s contribution, to the superintendent of the gaol who supplied weekly a list of those about to be discharged, to other prison officials who so willingly and sympathetically coopec’ted with the work of the society, to Mr. P. J. O’Regan. the honorary solicitor, and to Mr. F. W. Hart, clerk of the Court, who kindly audited the accounts.” Special praise was given by those present to the efforts of Mr. Mills on behalf of discharged ■ prisoners. The balanche-sheet showed a credit of £l2O.

All who held office last year were re' elected.
