A story in connection with the Maori is related by the “North Auckland Times.” The poll had closed at a country booth and the returning officer entered the Post Office for the purpose of telegraphing the result to headquarters. “By Jove,” he said, “I like these Maoris, they’re better than the Europeans.” ‘‘Why do you say that?” asked another person at the counter. ‘Oh, they do what they are told,” was the reply.
