SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

FORMATION IN WELLINGTON.

The proposal to form a symphony orchestra in Wellington advanced a further step at a largely-attended meeting held in the Chamber of Commerce on Thursday. Mr. G. A. Hart presided. It was definitely decided that a society be incorporated under the name of “The Wellington Symphony Orchestra,” the objects being to foster and encourage orchestral music and to inaugurate and hold from time to time orchestral performances in Wellington or elsewhere, as the executive council might think fit, and generally to foster, encourage and advance the art of music and the study of orchestral playing. It was reported that the number of subscribing members had already exceeded. 100. Mr. Leon de Mauny was unanimously elected musical director and conductor of the society. Mr. W. F. Pringle agreed to act as honorary solicitor, and Mr. H. Blick consented to act as honorary secretary. A provisional executive was appointed.
