OVER £88,000

ART GALLERY AND MUSEUM FUND NEARING THE OBJECTIVE Although many demands are being made on the public purse, the central aim of the Mayor and his committee is to secure the whole of the £100,00(1 required for the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum by the end of the year. The campaign has been signally successful—marvellously so, considering all things—and there is to be no lack of effort to secure the rest of the money. It was announced by the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup) at yesterday’s meeting of collectors, that the 88,000 mark had been passed, and that less than £12,000 now was required to make up the city’s contribution to this great monument to art and science that is to crown Mount Cook, and which will have an effect on the culture of Wellington city for all time. The new list of donations quoted below does not reach £BB,OOO, but further subscription lists were handed iu bv collectors at yesterday’s meeting, which will be acknowledged iu due course. The list made available was as follows :—
