PUBLIC-SPIRITED CITIZEN

+ GIFT TO CHRISTCHURCH Dominion Special Service. . Christchurch, November'22. The Mayor, the Rev. J. K. Archer, to-day received a cheque for £4OOO from Mr. T. J. Edmonds to cover the cost of the band rotunda which he is giving to the city and the improvements which are to be made to the river bank in the vicinity of the rotunda. The sum of £4OOO is intended to be used exclusively for the erection of the band rotunda and the.other improvements adjacent to it. Mr. Edmonds proposes to make a further gift to the city of a clock tower, which is to be erected on the triangular plot in Oxford Terrace, near the Oxford Terrace Baptist Church. The City Council has granted Mr. Edmonds permission to use this plot. Mr. Edmonds will employ his own architect, and through him let the contract for the work, bearing the whole cost himself. The band rotunda will be erected on the river bank in Cambridge Terrace between Colombo Street and Manchester Street and the other improvements comprise shelters for the public, eight artistic electric light standards, and the laying out of the grounds. The locality is to be known in future as Poplar Crescent. The Mayor expressed his appreciation of Mr. Edmonds’s generous gift to the city. He said that the cheque for £4OOO had been deposited with the council on the understanding that if the whole of that sum was not required the balance would be. given back to Mr. Edmonds.
