NATIONAL PARK
THE NEW HOSTEL The Tongariio Park Tourist Company has placed a contract with the Fletcher Construction Company for the erection of the new hostel at the Tongariro National Park. The hostel is to cost £68,500, and was described in some detail in “The Dominion” on September 3. A start will be made this week by the contractors on the erection of the lodges. The main building, which will consist of a basement and four stories, is to be completed by November of next year, and will be ready for occupation in December, 1929. The company has decided to provide for • the forthcoming Christmas season a lodge to accommodate 40 persons. Mr. Hall, of Timaru, who has travelled extensively in the tourist resorts of Europe and America, is the architect for the new hostel, and has designed a handsome structure-'of the Georgian style, which will be built of concrete, brick, and hollow tiles. Mr. J. B. Thompson, chairman of the Tongariro National Park Board, stated yesterday that the board owed a deep debt of gratitude to the Right Hon. J. G. Coates. Prime Minister, and the Hon. A. D. McLeod, Minister of Lands, for their personal interest and assistance in arriving at the present satisfactory position.
