UNAPPROVED ART UNION

TICKET-SELLERS’ DILEMMA

Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, November 22.

For some weeks past people in Christchurch, and, in fact, all over New Zealand, have been receiving books of art union tickets from Syd ney, with the request that they sell them and forward the money to an address in Sydney. . The art union is known as "The Southern Cross Art Union,” and is being promoted in aid of the .New South Wales institution for deaf, dumb, and blind children. By now many of these tickets have been distributed among the people of Christchurch and other cities, and during the last few days a large number of people have been to the Post Office for money orders, and postal notes for the purpose of paying for their tickets. However, they, have been unsuccessful, for all correspondence addressed to a certain place in Sydney is stopped. In other words, the holders of books of tickets are unable to pay for them. The reason for this is because the art union comes under the heading of a lottery, and is therefore prohibited in New Zealand. Although the art union has been approved by the AttorneyGeneral in New South Wales, it is not permitted by the Minister of Intern li Affairs in New Zealand. The art union, which has been got up in a very elaborate manner, has some very handsome prizes, amounting to the value of £2500. The first prize is a solid gold model of the Southern Cross, and there are several other prizes of motor-ears.
