CARNIVAL PAGEANTS

“THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS”

“Everything is going ahead wonderfully,” remarked the organiser, Mr. W. H. Honey, when referring yesterday to the arrangements for the carnival to provide funds for the National Art Gallery and Museum. Good progress is being made with the rehearsals for the two main pageants, “The League of Nations” and “A Dream of Fair Women.” Close on 1200 performers will take part, 800 in “The League of Nations” and 350 in the “Dream of Fair Women.” The first performance of “The League of Nations” will be given in the Winter Show Buildings on Monday, November 26, and the pageant will continue for the six following nights till Saturday, December 1. The musical director of the carnival, Mr. John Bishop, still needs additional instrumentalists and vocalists to take part in the pageant, and those wl:s> wish to assist can get in touch with Mr. Bishop by ringing at the Carnival office, opposite the “Dominion” building, or at 15 Orchard Street, Goldie's Brae.

The music for “The League of Nations” will include “Hungarian March” (Berlioz), the Beer Gynt Suite (Grieg), “Dance Macabre” (Saint Saens), “Prelude” to the Third Act, “Lohengrin” (Wagner), and, choral and orchestral, folk songs of Germany (“The Three Tailors,” “Thuringian Folk Song,” and “The Wanderer’s Song”), France (“Cadet Rousselle,” “If King Henry Gave to Me,” and “On the Bridge of Avignon”), and British Empire (“We’ll Mak’ the Keel Row,” “It Was a Lover and His Lass.” “John Peel,” etc.). Some of the folk songs have not previously been sung in Wellington, and have been specially arranged for fourpart chorus by Mr. Bishop. The final choral and orchestral number will be Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus,” from the “Messiah.” The producer of “A Dream of Fair Women,” Mr. J. Knowsley, is busy supervising the costuming for this pageant, which will be prefaced by a prologue. The staging has been planned to harmonise with the different ages in history that are to be portrayed.
