GERMANY AND SOUTH AFRICA
4 PROVISIONS OF TRADE TREATY PUBLICATION DEMANDED (United Press Association.— By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.) (Rec. November 4, 11.5 p.m.) Cape Town, November 3. Publication is demanded of the text of the South African Trade Treaty with Germany before its submission to Parliament for ratification. An official communique indicated that the principal clause involved unconditional favoured nation treatment, while safeguarding existing Empire preferences. It is now realised that if Britain grants further preferences it will be impossible for South Africa, to respond adequately, Germany . having the right automatically to claim concessions given to Britain.
The “Argus” points out that since 1922 German imports have increased two and a half millions, of which threequarters of a million is on Government account.
