OPENING OF WANGANUI SEASON i Wanganui, October 28. The official opening of the Wanganui 1928-29 rowing season took place yesterday afternoon. The ceremony was held at the Wanganui Roging Club's shed, there being a large attendance of etnthusiasts and their friends. During the afternoon a series of eight-oar sprints over a quarter-mile course from the town wharf to the boat shed, was held: The sprints were keenly contested, and resulted in some splendid rowing. The results were as follow: — Foster’s crew defeated Taylor’s crew by 2 feet. . , , Coxon’s crew defeated Dune s crew by & length. Quirke’s crew defeated Crotty’s crew by a quarter of a. length. , , . Senior Final.—Quirke’s crew defeated Coxon’s crew by a length. Final—ln the final Fosters crew triumphed over Quirke’s eight by ,ft length after a spirited race. The winning crew was as follows:—Foster (stk.), Carlson, Bridges, Gullery, Mackay, Percy, Stewart, Benson, W. Lett (cox). The starter was Mr. H. W. Cooper, and the judge Mr. R. Evans. The Garrison Band, under the baton of J. M. E. Tregilgas, contributed an enjoyable programme.
