Earlier in the year a convenience was provided for the public by the City Electrical Department in the form of an electrically-controlled clock at the eastern apex of the Manners Street reserve, opposite the Grand Opera House. It was discovered last week that the delicate mechanism of this useful timepiece was being affected, and this was put down to the force of the very strong gales experienced during the last two months, the large circular face of the clock on its somewhat slender cast-iron standard offering considerable resistance to the wind. In order to give the hollow standard great rigidity the clock has been dismantled and the standard filled with concrete, which, it is hoped, will have the desired effect. The idea of providing a clock in a busy street which commands no view of any other reliable public timepiece is a good one. '■
