PAVING STARTED
IN COROMANDEL STREET NO SEALING UNTIL NEXT MONTH A start was made with the work outlined on this season’s paving schedule on Wednesday morning, the weather being “set fair” to give it a good beginning. The gang is at work on Coromandel Street, that part of it which connects with Wilson Street, a section of reading used a great deal by through motor traffic from Wellington to the eastern suburbs (as an alternative route to Constable Street). When that job is finished the gang will transfer its attention to Wellington (or Karinga) Road, which leads downhill from the top end of Crawford Road to the Evans Bay Road (opposite the north-most corner of the Kilbirnie Recreation Reserve). After that road has been paved the work of paving the new Bond Street and Museum Street (at the rear of Parliament House) will be undertaken. As absolutely dry surfaces and warm temperatures are required to ensure satisfactory surface sealing of roads, it is not proposed to commence that work until early in November. Messrs. McKenzie and Duncan, the contractors who are to have the Ngahauranga Gorge and Tawa Flat roads for the local Highways Bpard, are busy assembling their plant and paving gangs, and hope to make a start with their 6} miles of paving on or about October 24, according to the weather conditions.
