ENCOURAGING THE JUNIORS.

HUTT VALLEY CLUBS TAKE THE ■< LEAD.

Ou September 6 last there appeared in the columns of “The Dominion” a comprehensive scheme for the encouragement of tennis among the juniors throughout New Zealand. That the article in question is already bearing good fruit locally is evidenced by the fact that each of the three leading clubs in the Hutt Valley is prepared to admit to free and full membership for one year, not only the most promising boy, but also the most promising girl player, resident in the vicinity. At the moment the selection of the two boys and the two girls for the two Lower TJutt clubs has not been completed, but the Petone elub, which has already fostered two outstanding school girl champions in Mrs. Sturman (nee Nancy Curtis) and Miss Dulcie Nicholls, has decided to admit immediately to free membership, on the recommendation of the president of the Wellington Public Schools’ Association, Edna Mutiiner, of Petone West School, primary schools’ doubles champion in 1927, and Ronald Greening, of Hutt Valley High School, a semi-finalist in the 1927 schools’ tournament. Both players are residents of Petone.

So far the only city club known to have followed the lead given by Messrs. Salmond and Spraggon, who recently donated free membership for two years at Miramar to tWo of last year's school champions, is the Wellington. Club, which has agreed to admit one junior fret this season. It is anticipated that other clubs will be only too willing to encourage juniors. ,
