SALE OF PEDIGREE STOCK

CENTRAL DEVELOPMENT FARM LARGE CATALOGUE DISPOSED OF There was a large attendance at the nineteenth annual sale of butter-fat record bulls, cows and heifers, and pedigree Berkshire and large black pigs submitted to auction on behalf of the Central Development Farm, Weraroa, on October 3.

Messrs. Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., who put through a big catalogue, state that young bulls of both the Red Poll and Friesian breeds sold particularly well. The Friesian bulls were submitted first and the top price of 50 guineas for a yearling was paid for Dominion Woodcrest King by Mr. W. H. Hoskin, Maugatoki, Taranaki. Tills was a beautiful type of bull of show standard and sired by Carnation King Matador Betty, who was imported from the United States some years ago. His dam, a great producing cow, is also from one of the most notable families in the herd. This cow, Dominion Woodcrest of Weraroa, was paraded in the ring at start of the sale and was greatly admired. She was in full milk and in addition to being a good specimen of her breed carried a most magnificent udder. In one month this great cow had produced 1071 b. butter-fat. A special point in relation to this marvellous performance was the fact that the record was made without any special feeding whatever, and the cow was not assisted by being milked three times a day. Her grandson, the second lot offered, but sired by Dominion Woodcrest Joe 2nd. realised 40 guineas, and was purchased by the Hawke's Bay breeder, Mr. L. Glenny, Waipawa. Another splendid bull from this family was Dominion Koromiko. sired also by Carnation King Matador Betty. He was one -of the best individuals in the offering and was secured by Mr. E. Openshaw, of Marton. The Boys’ Training Farm at Weraroa also secured a typical young sire from the famous “Domino” strain in Dominion Domino Ormsby. This was one of the first of the progeny of the latest imported sire brought from America, Pioneer Snow Ormsby, who is not only from a great butter-fat lino, but Is a half-brother to the greatest uddered Friesian cow in America. Two of the herd sires. Dominion Woodcrest Joe 2nd. who was reserve champion at the 1926 Manawatu Show, and Dominion Matador Obbe, who was first . prize • two-year-old at the 1920 Manawatu Show, failed to reach the reserves, but were sold privately after the sale to Messrs. J. S. Barstone, Mangatainoka, and G. Craw. Linton, respectively. Some beautiful young stock by both of these sires were on exhibition prior to the sale. The 12 yearling Friesian bulls averaged 27} guineas. There was practically no demand for the yearling Friesian heifers, but several of the good Friesian cows submitted made fair prices. Although last year there was little competition for Red Polls at the sale, the reverse was the case at this year’s fixture, and from the first lots submitted competition was very keen. The. seven yearling bulls submitted averaged 39 guineas. They were a splendid line, and buyers could easily have been found -for twice the number. The three top-priced bulls were all sired by Gresham Masterful, the imported herd sire who was champion at the first New Zealand Royal Show, and who is himself descended from English Royal and London Dairy Show champions. The top price of 51 guineas for a yearling was paid by Mr. J. Davies, of Ohau. This was for Dominion Waterloo, a full brother to last year’s Royal champion bull. Dominion Brussels. Mr. W. Leaslt, of Eureka. Waikato, paid 50 guineas also for Dominion Master Sylvan. This young bull is from the notable Sylph line, a strain outstanding for butterfat production. He was a very high-class individual. Probably the first lot submitted, Dominion Doctor Jim. who realised 40 guineas. was the bargain of the day. Mr. C. F. Cousins, of Colyton, Feilding, was the buyer at 40 guineas. The dam of this bull, Dominion Cecilia, is an outstanding cow, and the bull himself is brother to the Royal Show winning heifer, Dominion Tuli. The slx-year-old herd sire. Dominion Sylvanus, who was champion at the Royal Show in 1926, was also submitted. He realised 65 guineas, being purchased by Mr. F. White, of Eastry, Eketahuna. This bull promises to make a name for himself as a sire, .as his stock are not only of good type but are showing great promise as producers. The demand for .foundation stock was strongly demonstrated when the line of yearling Red Polls were submitted, and, although there were no sensational prices, a good selling trade was right through. 11 head averaging 27 guineas. As anticipated, there was not a great deal of interest in the pedigree pigs. Berkshire sows sold up to 10 guineas; large black sows, for which there was a better inquiry, up to a similar’amount; and large black boars up to 6 guineas. Particulars of the sales are as follow:—
