FROM FAR AND NEAR Legal Time Restored.—The Secretary, General Post Office, has received advice that legal time wiis restored in France at midnight on Saturday, and in the Irish Free State at 2 a.m. on Sunday.

Man in Small Boat Missing.—A man named H. G. Mclntosh, clothier, of Blenheim, put out to sea in an outboard motor-boat on Saturday afternoon, and has not been heard of since. It is feared that 'he boat has been driven out to sea—Press Assn.

Volcanic Ash and Pumice at Sea.— The steamer Carriso radios that on October 3, between 17deg. 25min. south and 176 deg. 9min. west, and 18deg. 28 min. south, she passed large fields of volcanic ash and pumice, some several miles in extent, states a Press Association message from Suva.

Commissions and Conferences.— Items appearing in the Supplementary Estimates show that a fairly large expenditure attaches to inquiries by commissions and conferences. The appropriations this year include: —Confiscated Native Lands Commission (on account), £1000; Medical Committee inquiry into adequacy:of accommodation, etc., for tuberculosis patients, £1000; Apprenticeship Conference, £427; National Industrial Conference, £lOOO (additional). The sum of £lOOO is provided for the expenses of the New Zealand Parliamentary delegation in Canada.
