EXPEDITION TO NEW GUINEA
NEW SPECIES OF SUGARCANE FOUND (Australian Press Association.) (Rec. September 18, 7.5 p.m.) Washington, September 17. Tlie Department of Agriculture has announced that the New Guinea expedition departed from Port Moresby on September 10, having collected 167 varieties of sugarcane, including one that proves to be a new species. It is a hard straight cane, growing to a height of 33 feet. Cuttings are being shipped to Washington under refrigeration for growth under observation. Duplicate cuttings are being planted in Sydney as a precaution against loss during shipment. [A message from Washington hist April stated that three leading sugar experts hud planned an aeroplane expedition to New Guinea under tlie auspices of the Department of Agriculture, seeking a sugarcane hardier than the present American varieties. Dr. E. Brandes, a member of the Department’s sugar plant section, was to fly to San Francisco in a Fairchild cabin monoplane. At San Francisco he was to meet Dr. Jakob Jeswiet, director of sugar experiments in Java for the Dutch Government. They were to be joined at Hawaii by- an entomologist, Mr. C. Pemberton. The aeroplane was to be shipped to Sydney from San Francisco.)
