The Dominion WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1928. WELLINGTON’S WINTER SHOW

To-day the Governor-General will open the M elhngton V intcl Show within its own permament building. Phis building the largest one-floor space structure in the Dominion, it ptovidin & 160,000 SqUa^ Ce Wffite?°Show7’thereforc, will have ample room in which to display the Agricultural, Pastoral, Industrial, and Educational exhibits, and also to provide those varied amusements which now receive the patronage of the public. . The Committee which has laboured unceasingly foi the past two years will to-day see the consummation of its labours when the fifth official show is opened by His Excellency Sir Charles beigusson. The members of the Committee are to be congratulated on bunging a difficult project to a successful completion. * Much still remains to be done to ensure the success of the exhibitions which will in future be held; but at any rate the Committee has done its part in providing a permanent home for these undertakings, and also in adding to the limited accommodation of the City for conducting popular functions on a large scale. Ine Winter Show premises will undoubtedly be used for many undertakings which hitherto have been handicapped by reason ot the absence of a building large enough to hold an audience in excess of the capacity of the Town Hall. . The Committee has wisely sought to widen the basis of appeal by including arrangements for the exhibition of live stock. v\ ellington is by no means ideally situated for a pastoral show, nevertheless the excellence of the facilities provided in the new building will do much to offset the difficulties to be faced in other directions. The stock exhibits will give the Winter Show that link with the primary industries which has been largely, though not entirely, lack-* ing in the past. Greater interest will be stimulated in the country by this step, and this should add considerably to the success of the whole venture. . The large extent of the floor space makes possible the presenting of all exhibits under one roof. How much more convenient is this compared with the old conditions under which the Winter Show was held when the Harbour Board sheds were used! d'hen, the exhibition was conducted in two adjacent sheds, with _the motor section situated at considerable distance from them. These difficulties were a great handicap. Now, they arc things of the past. • The favourable conditions under which the Winter Show is now being held should reflect satisfactorily upon the whole enterprise. Encouraged by the facilities afforded, the exhibitors may be expected to each year improve on their displays. This will be particularly in evidence in the industrial section. lhe Wellington Winter Show should prove of great value in enablingmanufacturers to demonstrate to the best advantage the growing efficiency of the secondary industries. This factor, together with the varied pleasure attractions, should ensure the attendance of a greater number of visitors than ever. The support accorded by the Government in providing an extensive educational section will greatly add to the popular appeal of the Exhibition, at the same time achieving the publicity desired by the Government Departments concerned. The Wellington Indus-; trial and Manufacturers’ Association has also given great aid. The local manufacturers have this year produced exhibits of undoubted merit, which cannot fail to interest the general public, while the general education of the public in industrial processes and products should reflect favourably upon the demand for such products as are exhibited. The Exhibition is a public-spirited venture, .meriting general support, and it may be hoped and expected that this will be forthcoming.
