REVOLUTION IN MOTORING

REMARKABLE GEARLESS DEVICE ' DRIVING SIMPLIFIED TO CHILD’S TASK (Australian Press Association.) (Rec. September 7, 7.15 p.m.) London, September 6. , A revolution in motoring is indicated by a successful 25,000 miles test In various parts of Britain, and 1 concluded to-day, with a gearless device for a motor-car described by well-informed circles and the “Daily Telegraph’s” expert, who tried it out in tlie thickest London traffic, as a marvellous invention, reducing motoring to mere steering and braking. The driving is declared to be a child’s task. A number of well known manufacturers have ordered sets to give prolonged tests with their own chassis. It is expected that several will be fitted at next month’s show at Olympia. The inventor, J. 11. Robertson, who has done much experimental work at tlie War Office in connection with tanks, thus far has spent £20,000 of his own money on the invention. The car tried out was an ordinary standard model, fitted with the new automatic variable gear, transforming the roughness of a low-priced cur into tlie smoothness of a steam locomotive. There is no clutch and no gearchanging. The automatic gear selects the right ratio according to speed.

The “Daily Telegraph's” expert says: “It is a magic performtince. The car glides rapidly from rest without shock. Tens of thousands of motorists throughout the world will hail the cars thus fitted with the greatest delight of their motoring career. The acceleration is wonderful. Tlie car crawls in traffic with ease. Tlie most important point of ail is that the device can be applied to all makes of cars. It is small wonder, therefore, that tlie chief manufacturers are hastening to test and apply tlie invention.
