OBITUARY
JOSEPH HATCH Hobart, September C. The death is announced of Mr. Joseph Hatch, aged 91. Mr. Hatch at one time leased from the Tasmanian Government Macquarie Island for the exploitation of the penguin rookeries and seal fisheries. He was formerly Mayor of Invercargill and a New Zealand Parliamentarian. [Mr. Hatch was a queer man: very active, enterprising, and speculative. "When he was 76 years of age,” writes "One Who Knew 'Him.” "he made a trip to Macquarie Island, where be had a dozen men of all nations working for him, killing and rendering down the fat porcine sea-elephants (which made the island a breeding ground), and in also getting oil from the myriads of penguins there. In order to do this Mr. Hatch held a commission from the Tasmanian Government. The men never lasted long at Macquarie Island —one of (he dreariest spots in the world—and on the trip mentioned the whole of the Hatch gang returned to the Bluff with their master.”]
