CITY CARILLON

ERECTION OF TOWER MAY BE READY FOR ANZAC DAY At the last meeting of the Wellington Carillon Society the chairman (Mr. 11. D. Bennett) was authorised to consult witli the Public Works Department on the matter of taking the next step towards the erection of the'carillon. namely, the selection of the exact site at Mount Cook (Buckle Street) for the construction of the bell tower, which the Government has promised to finance to the extent of £15.000. As tlie manufacture of the bells by Messrs .Tillett and Johnson, of Croydon (England) is now well under way. the society is anxious to push on with the tower* so that it will be ready for the suspension of the bells on their arrival early next year. The coul factors for the bells at one time had the impression that there was no immediate hurry for the bells as it was thought that Wellington was not ready to receive them, but that impression has been removed and the work at Croydon has been speeded up to such an extent that it will be possible for the bells to be suspended, tested, and dismantled, packed, shipped, delivered in Wellington, aud hung in position by Anzac Day next (April 25).

As the result of Mr. Bennett’s interview witli the Government, the matter of giving authority to go ahead with the work is now receiving the consideration of Cabinet. If that is favourable, lit is expected that the work of erecting the steel aud concrete belfry will be undertaken by the Public Works Department; but there may be some small delay inasmuch as the lower, though a structure apart, will become an integral architectural feature of the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum block, and the general ground plan of the whole scheme will have to be irrevocably decided upon before the site of the belfry is defined. Another item of interest is that, if required, the services of Mrs. Johnson (who is connected with the firm of .Tillett aud Johnson) as carilloneuse will be available for the opening performance.
