MIRAMAR LADIES’ OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY MISS E. GAMBRILL When Miss E. Gambrill, of the Wellington Ladies’ Club, holed out on the twenty-seventh green at Miramar yesterday, she defeated her opponent in the final of the Miramar ladies open championship, Miss V. Upham, of Miramar, by 11 and », and with the match won the open title for 1928. Miss Upham is last year’s open champion, and at present is the holder of the club championship. Ideal golfing weather was experienced for the match, and the links were in splendid order. The tournament was one of tlie most successful in the clubs history. Hie ladies’ club captain, Mrs. Torstonson, congratulated Miss Gambrill on her great play in winning the championship, and also Miss Upham on the fight she put up in the final against such a redoubtable and experienced opponent. They were pleased, too, to have at the tournament Mrs. Collinson, the New Zealand champion. Mrs. Torstonson referred to the match between Mrs. Collinson and Miss M. Ward, the match going to the twentieth green before Mrs. Collinson won it. The following (lay Miss Ward reduced her handicap. The pleasure of the meeting, added Mrs. Torstonson. had been enhanced by the cordial feeling that existed throughout among competitors, and she congratulated the committee, to whom the success was due, on the results of their untiring efforts, particularly Miss Carter, the secretary. The prizes were presented by the Miramar Club captain, Mr. M. J. Crombie, and Mrs. Crombie. Two fine golfers—Miss Gambrill and Miss Upham, the former having the greater match play experience—met in the final of the Miramar ladies’ open championship over 36 holes. These two golfers have frequently appeared as finalists in club championships and other golfing contests, and not so long ago they fought out the final in the Wellington ladies’ open championship. Yesterday Miss Gambrill played the powerful and spectacular golf for which she is noted, right from her drive at the first hole till her last putt at the twenty-seventh. On the other hand, Miss Upham was a very human golfer on the day, and frequent errors from the tees and on the fairways cost her many a hole. It was also apparent that she was not playing “up to form.” and at times she appeared susceptible to “nerves.” Miss Gambrill started well, winning the first hole, then the fifth, and the seventh, eighth, and ninth, all the intervening ones being halved. Going to the tenth with 5 up, Miss Gambrill overran her putt, both on the approach and the return ; Miss Upham was short with her drive and had an indifferent second, the hole being halved in 6. Miss Gambrill won the eleventh in 5. mid the twelfth was halved in 6, ami the thirteenth in 5. Steady 3’s and s’s halved the fourteenth and fifteenth respectively. At the

sixteenth Miss Upham dragged back a hole, the only one she won during the morning round. Miss Gambrill met trouble at this hole, finding a bunker with her second. Miss Upham was on in 2 and won the hole in 4 to 5, leaving Miss Gambrill 5 up. Winning both the seventeenth and the eighteenth, Miss Gambrill finished the mornings 18 boles with 7 up. zkt the nineteenth, on the resumption of play in the afternoon, Miss Gambrill was on the green in 3, and Miss Upham was on the edge of the green for 4. Miss Gambrill took two putts, however, and 6’s halved the hole. Miss Upham found a bunker at the next and Miss Gambrill won in-4 to 5. Both had good drives at the twenty-first, but Miss Upham foozled her second. By sinking a long putt Miss Gambrill won in 5. The twenty-second and twenty-third holes were both halved in 4’s, and at the short twenty-fourth Miss Gambrill was down in 3 and went to 10 up, Miss Upham going into the bunker at the right of the green. Miss Gambrill was too strong with her approach to the green at the twenty-fifth, and Miss Upham took full advantage of the opening and reduced her opponents’ lead by a hole. At the next, however, Miss Gambrill returned to 10 up. Hitting the ball from the edge of the green it hit against the rim of the tin and dropped in, no one appearing more surprised to see it go down than the player herself. Miss Gambrill won the twenty-seventh in 6 to 7, defeating her opponent 11 and 9. I A group handicap match played in the morning was won by Mrs. McMillan, of Titirangi, Auckland, who.defeated Mrs. Hanson, of Waiwetu, by 4 and 3. The scores were as follow: Mrs? McMillan : Out, 846443556-345;in, 544bj5. Miss Hanson: Out, 656553555- —45; in, 644656. The medal handicap resulted as follows : —First division : Miss M. Ward (Heretaunga).
