From its slender resources the committee granted assistance in the form of lodgings, food, new boots and clothes. The Red Cross from its general fund also came to the committee’s aid so heavy have been the calls during the month. Apart from this assistance, letters of introduction have been given to applicants to various firms where their services are likely to be absorbed. In a number of instances, employers supported the committee’s activity by finding vacancies. Some time ago the committee was instrumental in securing a return passage to his relatives in London of an old ex-seaman who found himself stranded in this country. This man has written from London expressing his warm appreciation of the timely assistance given in the hour of his dire need. Another man, for whom a new liair of boots had been secured, showed his gratitude by remitting amounts in refund to the committee totalling 15s. The treasurer’s statement showed a balance of £6 7s. 3d., from which had to be deducted accounts for payment amounting to £1 6s. 6d. The committee, through its chairman, Rev. It. Inglis, appeals to the public for donations to the fund. Sixtyfive cases have been dealt with, particulars ot which are recorded on file. It is felt that associated with each case are circumstances of a distressing nature which, if understood by the public, would make a direct appeal to their compassion and bring forth a more substantial measure of support which would enable the committee to continue In the discharge of its important work. Those desirous of giving their support should remit their donations to the Secretary, Red Cross Society, P.O. Box 969. Gifts of men’s clothing, boots, etc., would also he acceptable. They are distributed among families in sickness or distress, by the Ladies’ Rod Cross Auxiliary. Arrangements could be mado for the collection of such goods.
