CONFERENCE OF SOCIETIES REMITS CONSIDERED t The sixtieth biennial conference of New Zealand Acclimatisation Societies opened at Accountants’ Chambers, V elliuglon, yesterday, present -Messrs. L. D. An Otago remit in the following terms was carried : “Regulation 22 imposes the duty on the rangers to notify the Minister of anything lawfully seized. This should read to notify the secretary, who shall then notify the Minister. (Reg. 22 reads as follows: “It shall be the duty ot every ranger or constable who has seized any such game, animals, or other things as aforesaid, or into whose possession they have come, to forward immediate notification thereof to the Minister, etc., etc. ) Remits were passed in favour ot restrictions on the taking of game between sunset and sunrise, a minimum penalty of £5 for taking absolutely protected birds, minimum fines for shooting 'vRE out a license, and a minimum fine of £o for shooting a hen pheasant. The following remits were carried:- — “That the rights of Taupo district fishing licenses be extended to include the Waikato River, to the Waiotapu bridge.” (Hawke’s Bay). “That the Government be asked to take steps to prevent Roto Aira fish frOm getting into Taupo waters.” (Waimanno). “That the Government be requested to set up an advisory board in respect ot the Taupo fisheries, and that the acclimatisation societies be given representation on such board.” (Manganui). “That the Government be requested to amend the Taupo regulations to prevent any power-driven boat being allowed on the Tongariro River, as the presence of such boats is inimical to the best interests of anglers.” (Wanganui). “That the Government be asked to remove the protection from hawks, ferrets, weasels, stoats, and polecats, except in rabbit infested areas!” (Waimanno). “That the Government be asked to arrange with the Australian Federal Government to protect “Banded Dotterel!. (North Canterbury). A North Canterbury remit. — That tne Government should absolutely protect Black Teal in the South Island for at least three years,” provoked some dis- . mission. It was contended that in the North Canterbury district very few ot these birds were shot, because they were not too numerous. No objection was raised to shotting them where aey were plentiful. One delegate said these birds were the fastest things on the wing that he knew. It was decided to leave the ma!ter to the local societies. “That, as the Department of Internal Affairs desires to be advised upon the present condition of the deer herds in the Dominion, the subject bo discussed, and a report forwarded to the Department,” rend a Wellington remit. It was reported that the herds had much improved as a result' of the culling which had been done, and more licenses had been apnlied for in consequence. It was left to the executive to present a report to the Department ns to what should be done in certain districts where deer were still a menace. .
