A RACING PATRON’S GRIEVANCE

Sir,—l think it is time that the Wellington Racing Club were a bit more considerate to their patrons. I have been present at nearly every race meeting in the North Island, and have never paid ~s. for afternoon tea on any other racecourse but Trentham, also at nearly every racecourse the public are provided with sevoral scats on the lawn in front ot the grandstand, so that patrons who are suffering from lameness, weak hearts, and others who are incapable of climbing those awkward steps on to the immense stand should have a comfortable sent on the lawn, such as is provided at Ellerslie and ninny other Up-country courses.—l aln ’ CtC ” A SPORT.

Horokiwi, July 28. [Mr. J. M. Griffiths, secretary of the Wellington Racing Club community on the above letter, states: — The charge of 2s. for afternoon tea was agreed to by the club at the request of the caterer up to 2.30 pan., after which the charge is Is. fid. Formerly it was Is. Od. all day, and it was found that tap' public made use of this to indulge themselves to a meal, so avoiding the necessity of luncheon. In consequence the caterer was losing money, hence the decision to make the charge 2s. up to 2.30 p.m. Seats were formerly placed on the lawn in front (if the grandstand, and it was found that during the races people stood on them and knocked them about. Repairs and revarnishing costs after meetings began to assume unwarrantable proportions, so it was decided in view of the accommodation provided by the new stands to distribute the seats on other parts of the lawn, where they are still available for use.]
