FLOOD DISASTER

Forty villages surrounding Blagovestchensk have been washed out, and a portion of the city itself badly inundated. The basin of the Zeva River, a tributary of the Amur, is completely under water, and the population is rapidly evacuating its homes. Upwards of ten thousand are already homeless. The flood is the worst since. 1898. Kharbarovsk, Nikolaievsk, and the whole of the Lower Amur district are menaced. The damage is already estimated at five million roubles.
