After considerable difficulty and delay, a lease has been secured by a Te Kuiti syndicate of the Rangitoto coal deposits, with the result that mining is. being carried on and local coal sold in the town (says a Te Kuiti correspondent). The coal is of excellent quality. The presence of gum interspersed freely in the layers of coal indicates that at one time a kauri forest, must have existed •so far south as this spot. Three months of prospecting and driving have resulted in a large scam being located, and operations on a more extensive scale will be carried on. The benefit to the town of Te Kuiti in increased trade and employment, to say nothing of cheaper fuel, be appreciated.
