HOT AND COLD BATHS

SITE AND PLANS BEING CONSIDERED

A deputation from the Labour Representation Committee last night waited upon the City Council to express considered opinions upon the serious need for hot and cold water baths. . Councillor .Semple introduced the deputation, Mr. L. Glover and Mr. J. L. Johnson, and said it was'timb that Wellington took the lead as the capital city iu the matter of hot and cold shower baths. Mr. Glover, spoke of the provision made by the Harbour Board on the waterfront, but he said it was inadequate, and many of the men could hot get a bath when they required it. They bad asked the .Labour Representations Committee to bring the matter before the’council. There were hundreds of people living in rooms, and had no facilities for getting a bath, and it applied to-many people living in boarding houses, where it was the rule “only one a week.” In his view, a person required a bath more often than once tt week. It was too cold to “clip in the briny” at the present time. People should be given an opportunity to keep themselves clean, and the City. Council should make a much needed provision. Mr. Johnson spoke of his experience as a coal worker for many years when he lived in a house without a bath. The need was real, and was a matter of health and necessity, and not a luxury. The Mayor replied that the question was altered to that of the tepid swimming baths, upon which a deputation had waited upon the council. The answer would be the same, Hint the engineer had been instructed to report upon a site, and prepare plans. It would mean an expenditure of from £-10,000 to £60,000, upon which a poll would be required, and would be submitted to the electors. It would provide for hot and cold fresh and salt Water!
