ENCEPHALITIS
VACCINATION BLAMED AS ONE OF THE CAUSES REPORT TO BRITISH MINISTRY OF HEALTH (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (United Service.) (Rcc. August J, 8.5 p.m.) London, August 1. Vaccination is one of the causes of sleeping sickness, according to an important report to the .Ministry of Health. The committee states: “Ju our opinion the available evidence acquits vaccina virus of being the sole cause of encephalitis, but we are unable to exonerate vaccine from playing some part in its causation. Diseases under the heading of encephalitis include that known as sleeping sickness.” The report adds: "Recently there has been evidence here and abroad, especially in Holland, that an acute disease of tiie central nervous system, characterised in the main by symptoms indicative of encephalitis, has-occasion-ally followed vaccination. The occurrence of vaccinal nervous disease, however seldom it may occur, is of serious import, and cannot fail to affect vaccination. Both in the administrative and purely medical aspects early infancy remains the best time for primary vaccination.”
