— 4 APPOINTMENT OF DR. TEMPLE (Australian Press Assn.—United Service.) London, July 31. Owing to Dr. Lang’s translation to the Archbishopric of Canterbury, the King has appointed Dr. Temple, Bishop of Manchester, to the Archbishopric of York. (Australian Press Association.) (Rec. August 1, 7.10 p.m.) Loudon, August 1. Dr. Temple's father was flic former Archbishop of Canterbury. Dr. Temple announced at the convocation of 1918 that he had joined the Socialist Party. He has always had a deep interest in social questions. Early hist year he deplored the introduction of the Government’s Trades Disputes Dill. He supported the revised Prayer Book, and is regarded as something of a modernist and a supporter of the “centre” party in the Church.
[The new Archbishop of York, the Right Rev. William Temple, D.D., who was born in 1881, is the son of the famous Dr. Temple, Bishop of London, and afterwards Archbishop of Canterbury. He was educated at Rugby and Bafiiol College, Oxford. From 1904 to 1910 he was Fellow ami Lecturer in Philosophy of Queen's College, Oxford, and headmaster of Repton School from 1910 to 1914. From 1914 to 11)18 he was rector of SI. James's, Piccadilly, and Canon of Westminster from 1919 1 1921, when he became Bishop of Manchester. |
