LOCAL FRUIT MARKET

INFERIOR QUALITY AND LOW PRICES Commenting upon the condition of locally-grown fruit and vegetables lor the month of July, the Wellington fruit inspector reports to the director ot the horticulture division that with regard to the supply of apples for tlie month of July the shipments from Nelson had not been regular, consequently this was reflected to some extent in the prices. At the same time the bulk of the fruit coming forward on the Wellington market was ot inferior quality, and the prices realised had been in keeping with the quality, these being decidedly low ami mostly averaging 3s. to 4s. a case. Fancy grade lines had not been conspicuous by their presence, whilst most of those coming forward were found to be below the requisite standard of grade. A steady supply of pears had been maintained of good average quality. The supply of vegetables had been short of the demand at times, consequently the prices had been erratic and controlled by the amount of produce offering each day. Early Nelson potatoes, the first of the new season’s crop, had been offering and secured remunerative prices. Several lines of early tomatoes had also been available. The following is a fair average of jinces realised: —realised: —Apples: Dunns Favourite, fancy 4s. to 4s. Od. per bushel case, others 3s. Gd.; Stunners, fancy ss. to bs., others 3s. to 4s.
