DOCTORS AT LAW
ACTION TOR SLANDER. Hearing of the appeal by Dr. James Garfield Stewart, who asked that a decision by Mr. Justice Sim, be set aside, and that a verdict be given in his favour in a slander action in which he was the plaintiff, was concluded yesterday morning. On the Bench were Their Honours, Mr. Justice Reed, Mr. Justice Ostler, Mr. Justice Blair, and Mr. Justice Smith. Mr. 11. E. Barrowclough appeared for appellant, and Mr. J. S. Sinclair on behalf of respondent. In the Supreme Court Stewart sought to recover i'soo from Dr. Arthur Cecil Biggs, of Balclutha, medical superintendent of the South Otago Hospital Board, as damages for alleged defamation of character. A jury ’ad found in favour of Dr. Stewart, awarding him £25 damages, but after further consideration of the eases, His Honour entered judgment for the defendant, Dr. Biggs. It was against this decision that Df. Stewart appealed. The morning was taken up by Mr. J. S. Sinclair in addressing the Court, and ii: placing authorities before them on behalf of respondent. The Court reserved its decision.
